Robot That Can Learn, Think And Act By Itself

At the Hasegawa lab of the Tokyo Institute of Technology Japanese scientists have created a robot that can learn based on past experiences. The robot can think, learn and react to situations and teach itself new behaviours in an unsupervised manner.

The Self-Organizing Incremental Neural Network (SOINN) robot is described by its developers as “an unsupervised online-learning method, which is capable of incremental learning.”

SOINN learns through its own experiences, as well as through the large network of online information available to each robot model. Developers are now working on creating a robot that can multi-task, solving the problem of overly specialized robots.

The workshop venue is changed to the OSK lab in the library. Be the first few students to use the brand new lab! Date and session times remain the same.

Students are allowed to use their own laptops with the evaluation version of LabVIEW installed. But you are encouraged to use the computer in the lab. You may download the evaluation version of LabVIEW here.

NI LabVIEW Workshop

Hi everyone,

I am sure many of you had signed up for the workshop at the NI booth during the exhibition.

Well here it is. It is soon going to be April and as promised, we will be having the first National Instruments LabVIEW workshop here in UTAR, FES - Setapak Campus.

This workshop includes :

a) Hands on LabVIEW (each student will use 1 lab computer with LabVIEW installed)

b) Hardcopy Notes

c) Refreshments throughout the session

d) LUCKY Draw ! for 1 very lucky student

National Instruments is providing this workshop for free. However we need to charge a small sum to arrange the logistics for the event and most importantly to CONFIRM your attendance. There are very limited spaces therefore we can not afford people not turning up. RM 5 is a small sum for the things NI is providing especially this valuable opportunity to learn about LabVIEW's awesome Graphical Programming.

Please register and pay at the allocated time and place to confirm your slot in the workshop.

Robotic Challenge Week (RCW)

Robotic Challenge Week (RCW) is coming, which is organized by MMU Robotics Club, is a competition of combat robot. This event is from 13th August until 15 August and we'd already decided to organize a visit to MMU Melacca on 15th August.

Attention: One way trip to malacca on public bus costs RM 13 and we bring you there and back for only RM20/ RM22 !!!

The World's Smallest Motor

Scientists recently unveiled the tiniest electric motor ever built. You could stuff hundreds of them into the period at the end of this sentence.

One day a similar engine might power a tiny mechanical doctor that would travel through your body in the ultimate house call.

The motor works by shuffling atoms between two molten metal droplets in a carbon nanotube [watch it run].

One droplet is even smaller than the other. When a small electric current is applied to the droplets, atoms slowly eek off the larger droplet and join the smaller one. The small droplet grows - but never gets as big as the other droplet - and eventually bumps into the large droplet. As they touch, the large droplet rapidly sops up the atoms it had previously sloughed off. This quick shift in energy produces a power stroke.

The technique exploits the fact that surface tension -- the tendency of atoms or molecules to resist separating -- becomes more important at small scales. Surface tension is the same thing that allows some insects to walk on water.

The motor, a surface-tension-driven nanoelectromechanical relaxation oscillator, was built by a team of researchers led by Alex Zettl at the University of California, Berkeley.

Although the amount of energy produced is small -- 20 microwatts -- it is quite impressive in relation to the tiny scale of the motor. The whole setup is less than 200 nanometers on a side, or hundreds of times smaller than the width of a human hair. If it could be scaled up to the size of an automobile engine, it would be 100 million times more powerful than a Toyota Camry's 225 horsepower V6 engine, the researchers say.

In 1988, Berkeley electrical engineering professor Richard Muller and colleagues made the first operating micromotor, which was 100 microns across, or about the thickness of a human hair. In 2003, Zettl's group created the first nanoscale motor. Last year they built a nanoconveyor, which moves tiny particles along like cars in a factory.

A paper discussing the latest invention was published in the March 21 issue of Applied Physics Letters.

Nanotechnology engineers try to mimic nature, building things atom-by-atom. Among other things, nanomotors could be used in optical circuits to redirect light, a process called optical switching. Futurists envision a day when nanomachines, powered by nanomotors, roam inside your body to find disease and repair damaged cells.

"This oscillator is ideal for locomotive applications, since it is so powerful for its size," Chris Regan, a Zettl group researcher, toldLiveScience. "For instance, in a nanobot it could be used as the motor that drives crawling, walking, swimming, jumping, or flying."

More immediately, the new motor could be used within two years in existing Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS) technology, Regan said.

MEMS are tiny components made by etching away parts of a silicon wafer or adding tiny layers. As small as a grain of pollen, MEMS are larger than the nanoworld. They are employed in such things as microaccelerometers, the devices that activate automotive airbags. Optical MEMS are used in many home theater systems.

Regan said the shift to NEMS, the nano-equivalent of MEMS, "will take longer."

A competition, which known as "Pertandingan Robogamez", is going to be held at Universiti Tenaga Nasional (UniTen). This competition is opened to others universities. The date of this competition is from 1st October until 4th October. The attracting part of this competition is the fighting or battling between robots. You will be amazed by the technology and strength of the robots which build by participants.

Robotic Society will let you stand a chance to have a look on this interesting and exciting event. We will choose the last day of competition, which is 4th October, to organize a friendly visit to UniTen. You will able to see the Pièce de résistance from each team. A group from the University of Tokyo have developed a method for adding tangibility to holograms using focussed ultrasonic waves -

This project adds tactile feedback to the hovering image in 3D free space. Tactile sensation requires contact with objects, but including a stimulator in the work space dilutes the appearance of holographic images. The Airborne Ultrasound Tactile Display solves this problem by producing tactile sensation on a user's hand without any direct contact and without diluting the quality of the holographic projection.

First of all, all event's committees will be appreciated for their great effort, especially Ong Chi Wei and Kien Loon.

On 8.30am, every participants are gathered at ground floor of SA block. Everyone were waiting for departure.

Lecturer of UTAR, Mr. Chua Yea Dat, joined the trip as well. ^^

On 9am sharp, we departed on UTAR bus and headed to our destination~

It took us one and half hour to reach destination due to traffic jam. =.= Here we are! ^^

We had presentation from the representatives of two companies, Vepro Group and ABB. Both presentations briefly explained the idea of robotic system and the market distribution of robotic system all around the world.

Camera man temporary stopped his job during the factory tour due to the rules of the management. Anyway, here is a brief explanation of the tour.

We had "opened our eye" during this visit. From the process of making mineral water, water filling process, until packaging. We had gained a lot of knowledge and information regarding on the process control system as well as robot system (our main point of the visit).

The factory tour took around one hour and then we proceeded to our lunch session.

myFirst Robot

After Wednesday's session, I believe that u have totally no idea on how to build the robot. Therefore, we decided to have a demo on this Saturday (25th July 2009). Time is from 9am to 12pm, venue is SF workshop.

I will always post update in the blog, please visit the blog for updates. All information will be posted there.

On Wednesday, I had taught you:

1. The robot structure.
Rectangle structure is very stable. You can choose another design as well.

2. Sensor
IR sensor, infrared sensor. How to use 3 sensors to control it. We know that the line-following sensor is better weld under the wheel axis, because the sensor can react in the same time, and easy to be controlled.

3. Shaft
The shaft have to build that the way to fix in to the motor. Drill a hole and tighten the screw.

4. Lab machine.

UTAR Robotic Society is proudly presenting you "MyFirst Robot Workshop", a workshop which opened for all FES students to learn how to build their own robot. The first class was conducted on 8th of July 2009.

Below are the information about the workshop:

Tutorial Class: Every Wednesday 4-6 pm.

The following venue will at SF block, the mechanical lab, the usage of machines will be taught here. Due to some circumstances, the following venue will be informed through e-mail 3 days in advance. Don't Worry! All updated news will be e-mailed to you. So, check your mailbox frequently.
On next Wednesday, kindly bring your robot design and present it during that day.

Bear in mind:
1. MyFirst Robot Workshop will NOT provide all material (including aluminum bar), however you can borrow from Robotics Society as a member. If you want to borrow item from Robotics Society, please download the Borrow Item List or Request Form and contact
ONG CHI WEI 017-7121175. Pass the Borrow Item List to him, and he will open the cabinet for you in certain time. You can check his schedule which is pasted on the cabinet which is placed in front of the mechanical lab(SF block). The purpose of doing this, is just to control Robotics Society's properties, feel free to borrow all your needs from Robotics Society. This is because some components are very expensive.

2. Electronics component will not be loaned, because it is consumable item and hardly to reuse. So the component should be bought by yourself. BE CAREFUL!! There are thousand of similar components in the market. You can refer to CHOO SHIONG for further information regarding on electronics components, he is a kind people.

3. I request all of the team members to present what you had done during the tutorial class. The presentation will not consume more than 3 minutes. That is the way for you to share ideas.

4. The BEST way to learn is "ASK". Please ask during the class if you face any doubts. The workshop is opened for you to ask and learn. Building robot is very flexible, you can build your robot by using your own creative idea. YES! Please do so.

5. You have to build your robot at your free time. This is because tutorial class is just for learning.

UTAR Robotic Society is going to organize a technical visit to R.O Water Sdn. Bhd., a company incorporated in Peninsular Malaysia specializing in Reverse Osmosis Drinking Water. You will be inspired by the processing of drinking water.

Besides that, you also have chance to have a glance on the working and mechanism of its product machines which are produced by Vepro Sdn. Bhd., a well known engineering company in manufacturing electronic and mechanical parts which are commonly used in heavy industry field.

This trip is highly recommended to those who have knowledge in electronic, mechanical and programming. By this visit, you will understand the principles and theories of the design and development of an equipment.

By reading the introduction above is not enough. Take an action by getting yourself to the registration booth which will be placed in UTAR's canteen in period of 21st to 23rd July. Below are the full details of the visit:

A Son asked his father, "Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?" The father who, despite having a heart condition, says "Yes". They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons. The father always saying "Yes" to his son's request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his fater, "Dad, let's join the Ironman together."

To which, his father said "Yes".

For those who don't know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island.

UTAR Robotic Society had been formed since year 2008. A brand new committee board is formed after second AGM meeting on 1st of July 2009.

First of all, we want to thank the previous committee board for what they had done and contribute to this new society. As we can see, UTAR Robotic Society was undergoing development stage in beginning and now the society had been grown into a stronger and more active society. Yet, there are still a lot of knowlegde waiting for us to learn and explore.

It finally came to this happening day.

It was an event that virtually everyone - all the students, lecturers, staffs, cleaning ladies and guards were aware of.

It was the first of it's kind - a robot-related competition in UTAR.

It marked the milestone of something new.

It planted the seed of hope of UTAR to be part of the leading university in the Robotic World.

and to all the comittee and work force, a big thank-you to all of you. I might not be able to spend you guys meals in Tenji or Jogoya but I sincerely feel grateful for the willingness of you to be part of this competition. You guys are the best! Be proud of yourselves!

To all the contestants, bravo! It was the first baby step for you guys to join more robotic competitions in the future. To those who won, congrats and don't just stop there! Keep up the good work! To those who didn't, work harder and strive for excellence!

To future robotic society committee, do better than this in the coming years! Make things happen and amaze our fellow friends! I am pretty confident that you guys will be much more capable than this! :)

Robocon 2009 UTAR

Robocon 2009
Robocon is an annual robotic competition that has been held since 8 years ago. It first started in year 2002 at Tokyo. It's considered one of the most happening robotic-related event among the Universities in Asia.
Each year, the particular organizing country will come out with their very own unique theme. and I always find the theme to be a bit too long and peculiar. In 2006, hosted by Malaysia, the theme was "Building the World’s Tallest Twin Tower". =_=

Anyway, The contestants will have to make their robots to complete the tasks which is related to the theme. Therefore, before the match between all Asia Pacific representatives, each country will have their very own national level match with the same requirement and theme of the game. Then, the winner of each country will be sponsored to proceed to the Asia-Pacific region level. Meaning the winner this year will have the chance to go to Tokyo, Japan. (green-eye)
This year, the theme is "Travel Together for the Victory Drums". (again, long and peculiar XD) The contestants are required to make three robots. Two are required to carry one on a wooden palanquin (somehow it reminds me of penguin XD)to a specific location and unload it. Then the one being carried will be coming down from the palanquin and go and hit the drum. Couldn't visualize it? See this video lar.

2009 has marked a pretty memorable milestone for UTAR as this is the first year UTAR to have a team to participate in Robocon.
Frankly, UTAR was obviously still lagging behind. However, the effort and the time that we have put into doing this robot was not any less than any other universities. It's just that we are too new and inexperienced in this.
Anyway, next year it will be a different story. We will definitely make things happen!

An IntroductionTo Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs)
What Is a UAV ?The main requirement for UAVs emerges from the opportunity to perform high risk, dangerous and monotonous missions autonomously. Modern UAVs are controlled with both autopilots, and human controllers in ground stations. Removing the pilot provides addition freedom in terms of manoeuvre performance, size, payload and endurance constraints when compared with manned aircraft.

What Are UAVs Used For ?Since their creation, UAVs have found many uses in police, military, and in some cases, civil applications. Military roles include tactical reconnaissance, targeting and battle damage indication, electronic warfare in addition to active combat. UAVs offer benefits both in survivability and expendability, as well as being potentially more cost effective than returned systems. Civilian uses include such diverse roles as agricultural crop spraying, electrical power line checking, atmospheric research, data-link relay and traffic/security surveillance.

About the Speaker:

Mr. Julian Tan has over 7 years of experience in the research and development of UAVs in Malaysia. Some of his involvement includes installation of autopilot that has successfully flown an UAV in full autonomous mod, as Malaysian Junior Ambassadors during ASEAN SEAXXI (2001), extending invitations for the ASEAN member countries via experimental aircraft that he help to maintain and assembled. The experimental aircraft is in Malaysia Book of Records for crossing South China Sea. He holds a B.Eng (Hons) in Aerospace.

There will be ample opportunities for discussion and questions and answer during this presentation.

Well, if you're any of the above, then feel free to suggest improvements an how we can make our robot better!

Of course, with all suggestions, we need some rationale to support the change right? Before u suggest a change please recearch and provide a comparison on the following details between the old technology and the new idea (and write an essay if needed, hehe):

-How is it better
(lighther?, easier? faster?)
-Sample/example
(seen the product or an example? tell us where. Pictures worth more than words, and the item itself is priceless, hehe =D
-Price
(Not nescessarily cheaper, but is it proportional to the performance gain?)
-Availability
(where can get n is it in stock? or need order?)
-Datasheets
(except for ideas, ALL suggestions should (must actually) come with a link to the datasheet or item specifications. Items with no datasheet or with general info only are often not on par with performance, so none of it thanks)
-Impementation
(How are we suppose to incorporate the new device or idea into our current robots and/or technique? Any change can be made, but if it's with the cost of dumping all previous effort, then we'll think trice (3 times) =D
-YOUR PERSONAL BEST OPINION ->Often, it's not the product specs, but HOW u present it to us that makes us think twice =D So persuade us 'gau gau' wih all the reasons in the world and we might just use ur idea =D

U can post it in the 'comment' section of this post or e-mail it to any one of the directors, or just tell it to us when u see us in school.

On the coming January 2009 Semester, 4 February 2009, UTAR ROBOCOM will orgenize a competiton : " UTAR Blind Robot Competition" which open to all UTAR students. Wish that though this competition, we can learn and share more about "How to build and program a smart and high fexibility robot?".

For those who have knowledge in microcontroller programming (from whatever manufacturer, like Motorola, Atmel, Micro Stamp....) will feel right at home with the tutorials.For those who don't know, i'll discuss with our chairman and see what suitable time during the sem break should i hold the small tutorial class (somewhere between 20th and 26th).

In 2009, this contest will be hosted in Japan! Wow, what a nice country. Looking forward to that if we are able to go into the international contest, but first we have to face the challenges from all participants within our country.

The Final of Robocon 2008 held at Pune, India. The final was played between Egypt and China. China won with a margin of just 1 point.

Team Osaka (Japan) vs. NimbRo (Univ. of Freiburg, Germany)
The 2007 final was one of the best humanoid soccer games ever, if not the best. Team Osaka played with one goalie and one field player while NimbRo used two field players. The Osaka robots were very quick to approach the ball and to kick it across the field. The NimbRo robots excelled in one-on-one fights for the ball and also demonstrated nice team play. The exciting game was open until the end. The final score was 8:6 for NimbRo.

UTAR Blind Robot Competition

On the coming January 2009 Semester, UTAR ROBOCOM will orgenize a competiton : " UTAR Blind Robot Competition" which open to all UTAR students. Wish that though this competition, we can learn and share more about "How to build and program a smart and high fexibility robot?".

This competition will be mainly foces on the programming for the robot which the robot in competition will be required to "run" in certain route as fast as posible, as accuary as you can. Pls kindly refer to the "Rules & Rugulation File" for detail.
